Q:I think Luke actually hit that realization when Asch showed up and telling him that he's not real and is only a clone of him, effectively crumbling his mental state. I think people often forget the meaning that the game is trying to tell. The answer of life is one of the things that the game is trying to convey. That's my own personal thought. ^^"
Yes Luke was totally being broken down and rebuilt…but that’s one way to maturity, people go through life-changing experiences and come out a better version of themselves. They simply didn’t have time for him to do that naturally (and it wouldn’t make a very good story either). So Akzeriuth and what happens after is probably one of the most traumatic events in the game for that reason.
I LOVE TALES OF THE ABYSS.
I just can’t stand people giving any of the player characters in TOA any flak for what they do. Like I’d read reviews on the game and people would either bash Luke or bash the teammates for being mean to Luke (I guess it’s been like this for ages and I’m just late to the party). I think Luke already has many defenders so I just want to say a little about the teammates.
One thing I found extremely realistic and extremely right about what TOA preaches is having the correct attitude in the correct situation, and that people can change. Luke is more like the audience surrogate or the character you relate to, and depending on your own personal experiences and your personality, you may find the other characters scathingly unforgiving or you may find that they have a point. I’m more with the latter. Because the rest of the characters are adults compared to Luke (if we take into account the number of earth-years they have on them, everyone is in their 20-30s with Jade a whooping 70 years old, mentally. While Luke is 14). The key thing is they’re all emotionally mature adults, they are realistic, rational, and shoulder responsibilities. They can be scathing for sure, but they can also be forgiving and willing to give guidance. I’m not sure how to express this without it going into a 5k word essay, but I did NOT feel like they were deliberately picking on Luke for fun like what some would claim (except Jade, but he rips into everyone), nor did they blame him exclusively for Akzeriuth, they were blaming themselves as well, but it was Luke’s attitude that was the last straw on the camel’s back for everyone.
In other words, they were just being human. And I like that.
Mr. Nice View Of Hod Besides I Made A Promise
You, dear sir, you drive me crazy, and not in the good way.
I went to read up on other people’s theories and now I’m crying over TOA’s ending again. I honestly don’t know why I do this to myself. Well time for big walls o’ texts. Hopefully this time I can finally put myself out of misery.
More like a game thoughts post
I guess I just want to write something because last week I was obliterated by TOA and then I remember I had been similarly obliterated by one other game before…PERSONA 3.
It’s funny how they share a lot of similar themes like what is the meaning of life when you’re destined to die, etc. In both games the protagonists have to deal with some kind of “other self”, and in both games the protagonist die to save the world leaving behind their friends and someone who always watched over them. I guess the main difference is how the protagonist was handled while Luke was a dynamic character who grew, the P3 protagonist all throughout was silent with subdued emotions. Though from the gameplay you can see he’s genuinely nice (if you don’t choose the jerkass options haha). There’s more differences and my point is not to compare the two games. I’m just rather weak to the whole “protagonist dies in the end” games because I do end up liking protagonists a lot.
Some Tales of the Abyss Thoughts
Wow this game makes me think so much. I’ve looked around the fandom a bit and I guess everyone has their own interpretations of the characters’ motives and THAT DANG ENDING.
Under a cut because it might be long! I really love discussion on topics of my favourite games so if you want to talk send me an ask or fanmail!
sistaofpeace1’s Ending Theory to Tales of the Abyss
Hello people and welcome to my ending theory to one of my favorite games of all time, Tales of the Abyss. Now, I completely and fully understand that the developers want players to basically come up with their own ending and just believe what they want. And it’s really Namco’s fault for trying to make the ending intentionally confusing and vague, however, I think there are many factors put in the game already that show what the developers truly intended—and that is what this post is about. I’ll admit, even after nearly eight years of trying to analyze the ending myself (I first beat the Japanese version of the game in Feb 2006), I’m still not 100% confident in my own theory and speculation due to Namco purposely not explaining some critical elements. But I’ll still share with you what I’ve come up with myself based on the game’s “science” and various dialogue said by certain characters—even what others deem to be “evidence” leaning toward other theories, but I will use those to show how it actually proves otherwise. So huge wall of text coming forth as I attempt to explain all of this in detail.
(Update 2/3/14: Just made a few modifications to some word choices—content is still the same)(Update 3/1/14: Put in the correct translation that was written in the Abyss anime fanbook)
This post is divided up into the following:
I. In-game evidence (aka the Contamination Effect and the Big Bang)
II. Themes and the epilogue
III. In official supplementary materials
IV. Why other theories simply do not work
After watching TOA anime with my 9-yo sister…
Sis: Does Luke and Tear get married?
Me: I don’t know, what do you think?
Sis: I think they’ll get married if there’s a TOA2, since they love each other. Will the storywriters tell us?
Me: Probably not, the story is already over.
Sis: Well, I think they got married anyways.
I rewatched TOA anime with my sister (9 years old) and it made both of us sob (especially at Luke cutting his hair part) and my little sister actually likes it so much she wants to rewatch it www She likes Luke, Tear, Asch and Mieu just like me ehehehe and also Jade because he’s funny.
I love Luke/Tear and Asch+Luke and I just—I WANT TO SEE LUKE HAPPY WITH TEAR AND LUKE AND ASCH LIVE AS SEPARATE PEOPLE OR MAYBE EVEN BROTHERS SO SO SO MUCH /SOBS HEART OUT WHY YOU DO THIS TO ME TOA
